柏格曼在一次訪談中曾說：「劇場是我忠實的妻子，而電影是我昂貴的情婦。」導演畢約克曼便以此為標題，蒐集了許多柏格曼在幕前幕後與演員工作的實景：他和攝影師尼克維斯特的親暱，與英格麗褒曼在《秋光奏鳴曲》的幕後互動；更請來阿薩亞斯、史柯西斯與伍迪艾倫等大師評論電影中那些觸動他們的片段，使得本片更彌足珍貴。

Guided by Liv Ullmann and with commentaries from filmmakers for whom Bergman is and remains an important influence such as Woody Allen, Olivier Assayas, Bernardo Bertolucci, Arnaud Desplechin, John Sayles, Martin Scorsese and Lars von Trier, this film provides a vivid portrait of the artist who in each new project found a challenge for himself and for the people he worked with.
