當傳統功夫片在八○年代逐漸失去觀眾的時候，成龍一方面解放了這個類型的時空枷鎖，順利轉移到現代；另方面透過更高難度的動作，以及與劇情更密切的整合，開創了港片的新紀元。從巴士追逐到商場緝凶，表面故作輕鬆，其實如履薄冰。台港兩大女星林青霞、張曼玉上陣拼搏的難得演出，也為人津津樂道。而它領先所有港片入選紐約影展的殊榮，也預告成龍的西征好萊塢。
