蔡康永也參與編劇的《功夫皇帝方世玉》，賦予李連杰少見的調皮形象，正宗「南拳媽媽」苗翠花（蕭芳芳）更是光芒難擋。母子倆先後打擂臺，不僅武功了得，翩翩風采更攪亂了胡慧中、李嘉欣這兩池春水。呼之欲出的性別越界，喜鬧與悲壯相容不悖的成長儀式，都讓本片非同凡響。全片的劇情密度與情感張力，港片之中也屬少見。

Set in the Qing Dynasty, the young Fong Sai-yuk enters a martial arts tournament to win the hand of Ting Ting, not knowing that Ting Ting has escaped and is replaced by her ugly maid. Fong loses on purpose, which infuriates his mother; she enters the tournament in drag and causes Ting Ting’s mother to fall in love with her…
