大學新鮮人開學首日便意外闖上台而惹得眾人恥笑。為了贏得同學們另眼相看，他加入了美式足球校隊，練得全身骨頭都快散了，卻仍只能當個打雜的茶水僮，直到翻身機會送上門來為止。《新鮮人》是哈洛羅依德在二○年代票房最成功的電影，並在當時捲起了一波大學校園電影的風潮，就連巴斯特基頓也深受影響而拍出了《愛情長跑》。

Harold Lamb is so excited about going to college that he has been working to earn money, practicing college yells, and learning a special way of introducing himself. When he arrives at Tate University, he soon becomes the target of practical jokes and ridicule. With the help of his one real friend Peggy, he resolves to make every possible effort to become popular.
